Microbial Analysis

FAME Analysis

Rapid, precise, and economical, fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) analysis is uniquely effective in the identification of environmental bacterial isolates. The FAME database of 2,100 species excels in identifying organisms commonly recovered in QC programs.

The FAME profile (a unique "fingerprint" of the organism) is compared to over 200,000 profiles in the database. The profile is matched to a database entry to speciate the organism. A Similarity Index quantifies the confidence level of the match.

Test report data is reviewed by two microbiologists to approve identification results. We provide our clients with comprehensive information, including lab notes, raw data, interpretive data, and comments.

The identification process begins with an isolated culture and controlled incubation conditions. Fatty acids are extracted from harvested cells and analyzed using automated gas liquid chromatography. The GC data produces a FAME profile that both names and quantifies the isolate's fatty acids.

Microcheck creates and maintains a secure database of FAME profiles for each of our clients. These archives are accessed to compare recent organisms to those recovered months — or years — earlier.

Powerful technology that accurately identifies organisms to species level combines with affordable pricing to provide the best choice for routine microbiology QC support: FAME analysis by Microcheck.
